Silent protest against City Kinara Restaurant fire tragedy, Kurla

Following the tragic loss of eight young students (including one female and six males from Don Bosco Institute of Technology) in the City Kinara Restaurant fire in Kurla on Friday, October 16, 2015, a ‘silent protest’ was organized. The NGO Watchdog Foundation, Save Our Land, and Police Reforms Watch held the protest in front of Vinobha Bhave Police Station in Kurla from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The main purpose was to raise awareness about the corrupt activities of the BMC that led to the loss of these young lives. Protesters demanded the arrest of the concerned BMC officials, including Municipal Commissioner Mr. Ajoy Mehta and Assistant Municipal Commissioner Mr. Prashant Sapkale, along with the restaurant owner, Mr. Sharad Tripathi. Srs. Catherine and Rosaline from Sahayini Social Development Society participated in the protest, along with NIOS students from Mazzarello Academy - Wadala: Karen, Pranita, and Clifford. The protest began with a prayer moment, followed by an invitation from the Inspector of the police station to some close relatives of the victims to submit their recommendations. The police promised swift action to arrest the culprits as soon as possible. The community was disheartened by the tragedy, and hopes and prayers were offered that such events resulting in the loss of precious lives would never occur again. (Report by Sr. Rosaline Pereira)
