Sahayini outreach: awareness on police and human rights in Wadala

📅 January 13, 2016 • 📍 Wadala

Sahayini Social Development Society organized an awareness program in Wadala Village on January 13, 2016, at 8:00 p.m., assisted by the youth of Om Shree Sai Mitra Mandal – Wadala. Sr. Magdeline Sequeira, the Social Development Co-ordinator, welcomed Mr. Dolphy D’Souza, Convenor of Police Reforms Watch, and his team, who were invited to speak on the topic, “101 Things you wanted to know about the Police but were too afraid to ask,” a Commonwealth Human Rights initiative. Mr. Dolphy D’Souza emphasized that while people have duties toward the police, it is equally important to know one's own rights and duties. He stated, “Every day we come in contact with the police and we know very little about them.” He stressed that responsible citizens, people, and the police must work together to uphold the law for the common good. He highlighted the importance of understanding the police's work, challenges, organizational structure, and the limits of their powers and duties. The team showed relevant video clippings, distributed booklets on the topic, and held a discussion with the local people. Despite their busy schedules, Mr. Dolphy and his team spent an hour with the community. Gratitude was expressed for their service.
