EMPOWERING WOMEN – A WAY OF REACHING
THE ENTIRE FAMILY AND SOCIETY AT LARGE.
Women represent 50% of the rural population and take up many household responsibilities. They have the knowledge and skills for different agricultural and household jobs. However they do not have access to many resources and have to look for ways of getting money – money for seeds, fertilizers and for the purchase of goats, cows & buffaloes, also during times of sickness and for the marriages of their children. They go to money lenders to take loans and get indebted because of exorbitant rates of interest.
Organizing women using the Self Help Strategy with initial training and guidance has the topmost priority in the Province. The Goal has been towards the Socio-cultural-political & economic empowerment of women through Self Help Groups.
Today we have 12 active centers working towards WOMEN EMPOWERMENT in the four regions of GOA – GUJARAT – KARNATAKA – MAHARASHTRA. We have about 394 SHGs with 4899 members. Most of our centres have formed committees to take care of the areas of Health – Human Rights – Advisory – and Review along with other 6 task-force village groups of women in order that they utilize their empowerment in an integrated manner.
The Pushpanjali-Dakor centre at Gujarat has moved beyond SHG to form ‘Sahayak Women Cooperative’.
Nandgad centre in Karnataka has formed Jagruti Women NGO and Spurti Women Ferderation.
Four centres have Groups registered under DRDA and others are linked with Diocese, government and non-government agencies gaining benefits for skill training, awareness, subsidies towards housing, sanitation, income generative activities, children’s education, health needs, village and village/ area uplift etc
As a province we would want to move from ‘Empowerment of Women’ towards ‘transformation of women and the society in which they live’ through Advocacy and network assume their rightful place in society demanding their rights and access the available resources thus utilizing their own capacity to achieve development for themselves and the society in which they live.
